conversations07 May 2008 - 1:42 p.m. |
ok this is totally random but anyway i overheard these two conversations outside today (i wasn't eavesdropping on purpose!) and well i somehow decided to blog about it =p
[in the post office. i think this couple is trying to apply for mai redirection and both husband & wife need to have proof of address.]
MAN: ok look i have here a bill stating my name & address and a bank statement giving proof of my address as well. my wife doesn't have any bills under her name coz it's all under my name so i've brought along this HM Revenue statement which has her name & address on it is that ok?
MANAGER: i'm sorry but we only accept forms of ID that are stated in the list on the application form.
MAN: yes i know but my wife really has no bills or anything that is under her name so i really have no choice.
MANAGER: yes i know sir alot of people come to us with the same problem but we really cannot help you. we can send your application to Royal Mail for you but they might still reject it anyway so it's not up to us to decide.
MAN: is there really no other way?
MANAGER: does she have a driving license?
MAN: no we don't even have a car.
MANAGER: a bank account?
MAN: no i already said that she doesn't have one.
MANAGER: joint account then?
MAN: -frustrated- no everything is just under my name.
MANAGER: does she have the same surname as you? (if same surname can just apply together with one ID)
MAN: no she doesn't have the same surname as me.
MANAGER: then i really can't help you sir.
WIFE: -cuts in- look if he's got the bills with his address on it and it is obvious that i am his wife (she was pushing a pram with a crying baby inside) why can't you just accept it.
MANAGER: sorry but...
MAN: so if i have all the necessary stuff but my wife doesn't she cannot apply for it. ok that's just stupid. really stupid.
and that was all i heard until. i dunno i was quite amused but i think the guy must have been damn pissed.. it sucks that everything is so rigid and if u just happen to be one of the rare exceptions then everything's just gonna be tough for you. i was quite surprised that the couple didn't have a joint account though =p maybe it's just not common around here.. dunno what happened to them in the end. i think the post office guy will probably just redirect them to Royal Mail or smth. though i dun think that will be much of a difference.. but i really wonder if they will accept a marriage certificate =p i was kinda waiting for the guy/wife to bring it up actually.. maybe they did in the end =p haha mm was thinking that if it were back in singapore you just hafta complain and i think usually you will get ur way =p
[along gloucester road on my way home. mum & young daughter were discussing about someone's birthday.]
GIRL: so what can you get him! a school bag?
MUM: nahh he's already got a school bag.
GIRL: how about a bicycle!
MUM: nahh he's already got a bicycle..
GIRL: so what are you going to get him! -excited high-pitched tone-
MUM: well i dunno.. maybe i'd go back and think about it later.
GIRL: hmm.. -pause- what about me!
MUM: but your birthday's not tomorrow!
GIRL: i knowwww but what can you get me!
MUM: i dunno i've got alot of time to think about that..
GIRL: well.. but i know what you can get me!
and that's all i heard. haha i kept smiling to myself throughout the whole conversation lah. and she was like only 5-6 years old? (i think. can't seem to tell the age of european kids properly =p) european kids are really so adorable lah. like that time i was at zurich and i walked by this bus stop where this little girl was hugging her daddy (i think her dad was going away for a trip) then she walked away from the daddy towards her mummy but midway she like turned around and shouted (as in really loudly) "DADDY YOU MUST TAKE CARE OK!" haha then the other pple at the bus stop started laughing and the daddy was abit shocked but he smiled after that. ahhhhhh so cute =)
haha i remember my first encounter with the kids here was at pimlico last year. 9-10 year olds at some primary school at battersea (gosh it took me so long to remember the name of that place. keep thinking blacksea blacksea =p) mhmm and yah i was pleasantly surprised about how responsive & talkative they are.. but that's only nice when they are still young i guess =p that's why i find 5-year old little girls (sorry i'm a bit biased towards females haha i dun usually find 5-year-old little boys adorable =p) who talk so much in that innocent voice so cute =D if only my class next time would be like that. they pay attention to you really closely and then ask you loads of questions and give lots of suggestions.. i'd enjoy my job alot more lorh. but then again there's always that disadvantage of liking to talk of course =p
okok enough i didn't intend to blog so much. gotta work on my project now.. coz of someone i'm becoming addicted to inkscape lah =p no that's not another new game but it's a graphic programme smth like photoshop but it's vector graphics (i likeeeeeee!) and it's a lot more user-friendly to draw and design stuff i guess. shall post some photos of the stuff i drew up onto facebook maybe heh. must wait till i'm better at it and progress from the cute cute stuff to smth that looks more pro =p alright all the best for exams people!
